Central Slovenia

The heart of Slovenia is Ljubljana. The Romans in their time called it Emona, while the medieval Ljubljana was located between the River Ljubljanica and the hill upon which the mighty Castle of Ljubljana is standing.

In the castle romantic weddings are being held but also different cultural events that are being protected by the walls of the monumental castle. You can reach the castle with a funicular are walk up the hill and enjoy the view of the old town.

Ljubljana is a city in which history and modernity stand side by side. The city, embellished by the architect Jože Plečnik, certainly has a rich historical and cultural heritage. It is full of interesting buildings, palaces, museums, galleries, parks, picturesque streets and squares, bridges, an opera, theaters, a botanical garden and a Zoo.

Golovec is with its astronomical observatory in addition to Rožnik, Mostec, and Tivoli a very popular promenade for the people of Ljubljana. To all this we certainly must add the beautiful scenery of the Kamnik – Savinja Alps.

In the surroundings of Ljubljana there are numerous attractions that are inviting the visitors, such as Iški Vintgar, a gorge with picturesque river pools, Borovnica with a gorge Pekel (Hell) with waterfalls and whitewater, Vrhnika with springs of Ljubljanica River, the former monastery Bistra in which there is a Technical Museum of Slovenia, Zbilje Lake with diverse recreational possibilities, Stična with a renowned Cistercian monastery and a religious museum…

On the southern edge of Ljubljana spreads all the way to Vrhnika a famous marshland Ljubljansko Barje (Moor of Ljubljana) that is today one of the largest grassland areas of Slovenia and represents a refuge to numerous animals and plants.

In the Sava Valley, at the beginning of the Zasavje Hills lies Litija.

North of Litija, high up the hills is Vače, the geographical center of Slovenia (GEOSS) that are also known for a prehistoric Iron Age archeological site with important finds.
