Sava river region

Zasavje is a region in Slovenia that includes the mountainous world around the Sava River.

Zasavje has with its opening of the mine in the first half of the 19th century experienced industrialization among the first region of Slovenia strengthened by the nearby railway line Vienna – Triest, especially after 1862 when Zidani most became with the opening of the line towards Zagreb an important railway junction.

Along the railway and brown coal mines mining towns of Zagorje, Trbovlje and Hrastnik developed. The mines in these towns are today slowly being closed but slowly the importance of other industries, such as chemical, glass, cement, electronic and others is growing. But the thermo electric power plant Trbovlje remains being important.

There in 1976 360 meters tall chimney was built that remains the highest building in Slovenia and the tallest chimney in Europe.

Even these towns carry a specific mining character many countryside traditions are preserved in their vicinity, as well as natural and cultural attractions. Across the surrounding hills it is possible to ride a bike on numerous biking trails, as well as on a circular horse track.
